The Importance of Scripture
As I wrote in chapter 7, one of the primary ways we glorify God is to become more like Him. Therefore, it’s essential that we know Him well. Reading and studying four broad categories of Bible verses can be especially beneficial for this purpose. In addition to other studying God leads you to, I’d recommend you look up the following verses and draw some conclusions:
The roles of the Holy Spirit: The book of Isaiah reveals much about the Holy Spirit. Check out these verses: 11:2, 32:15, 34:16, 40:13, 44:3-5, 63:10-11, and 63:14. What other verses in the Holy Word of God reveal more about the Holy Spirit?
The attributes of God: You can check out these Psalms to learn much about God: 1, 8, 19, 23, 27, 32, 33, 34, 36, 42, 45, 51, 66, 71, 76, 81, 89, 93, 96, 97, 99, 104, 107, 111, 113, 119, 130, 139, 145, 148
The Importance of Church
Where we worship can either build up or tear down each component of the Model of Authentic Hope and Wholeness. Does the service you attend and what you experience there (e.g., the teaching, worship, prayer, and fellowship) increase your security, identity, belonging, purpose, and competence in God? What about Sunday school, small groups, and other opportunities sponsored by your church? Are you learning what you need to about yourself? Is Christ proclaimed and is the Word celebrated? Do the purpose, mission, and core values line up with God’s Word? Can you be fully supportive?
Are you learning more about Christ and how to develop Christlike qualities?
I would not be who I am and I could not do what I do without the teaching and support of my Senior Pastor and the staff, leadership, and fellow travelers of my church. Your church matters to you, too!
