Who Will Know Me Here? Preparing Kids for Friendship and Belonging
Friendship can sometimes be treated as the pleasant social side of childhood, while education receives serious attention. But relationships are part of formation.
Research has linked strong childhood friendships to later mental and physical health, increased self esteem, reduced risky behaviors, resilience, and greater ability to cope with adversity. Those are not insignificant outcomes. And friendship takes time.
The Moment Is Not the Whole Story: Helping Kids Recover from Rejection
A child who is not invited may conclude: “No one wants me.” A child who is cut from the team may think: “I no longer belong with the athletes.” Belonging gives children a place to stand in relation to other people. It helps them recognize that they are wanted and included.
When belonging is threatened, the loss can feel larger than the specific relationship or group. The child may feel displaced. The question is no longer simply, “Why did this happen?” It becomes, “Where do I belong now?”
Well Behaved Is Not the Goal: Raising Kids Who Know Who They Are
Behavior can become a parenting report card. When children perform well, we feel affirmed. When they struggle, we feel exposed. That pressure can cause us to correct behavior without becoming curious about what is happening beneath it. We want the visible problem to stop. But parenting is not primarily about making children look impressive.
