School Should Teach Kids How to Think, Not Just What to Know

It is easy to become discouraged about education when the conversation starts with national numbers. In the research we discussed recently on the Celebrate Kids Podcast, Americans expressed very low confidence in the school system broadly, yet when parents were asked about the actual school their own children attended, the picture became much more positive. That difference caught my attention because it suggests that many of us are carrying two separate impressions at the same time: we may feel deeply uneasy about education as a system while still being thankful for our child's teacher or local school. The challenge is that frustration is much easier to feel than to define. The child is drawn into a conversation, trust develops quickly, an image may be shared, and then everything changes as pressure and fear take over.

Don’t Label the Boys, Call Them Forward

I understand why generational descriptions are attractive. They help us organize enormous amounts of information and ask whether something in the culture has shifted. But parents do not raise generations; we raise Josiah, Benjamin, Marco, Samuel, or whatever name God has placed in our home. The statistical boy and the boy sitting across from you at breakfast are not the same person, and parenting becomes much wiser when we remember that distinction. Dr. Kathy's concern in the episode was not that research is useless, but that temporary descriptions can become permanent labels when we stop seeing individual variation.
