Don’t Let AI Do the Thinking Your Teen’s Brain Still Needs to Practice
One strange thing about parenting in the age of AI is that the tool often works exactly as advertised. A teenager has a question, and within seconds they have an answer. They need ideas, and AI generates ten. They do not understand a concept, and the technology explains it again in simpler language. That can be incredibly useful, but it raises a developmental question we cannot ignore: what happens if the tool becomes so effective that our kids stop practicing some of the thinking they still need to learn how to do for themselves?
That concern was at the center of a recent Celebrate Kids Podcast conversation about artificial intelligence and brain development. The episode focused especially on the prefrontal cortex, the part of the brain involved in decision making, impulse control, cause and effect reasoning, self regulation, and social judgment. During adolescence, those capacities are still developing, which is one reason teenagers can be remarkably intelligent and still make choices that leave adults wondering whether any thinking happened at all. The concern raised in the episode was that if AI consistently becomes a substitute for thinking, researching, deciding, waiting, or wrestling through uncertainty, young people may get less practice exercising capacities that are still being formed.
Adolescence Is Supposed to Include Practice
We sometimes talk about the adolescent brain as though its unfinished development is simply a liability we have to endure until adulthood arrives. But we can see it another way. Adolescence is a remarkable season of practice. Teenagers are learning when to act and when to wait, how to weigh consequences, how to advocate for themselves, how to regulate emotion, how to make decisions without a parent standing beside them, and how to recover after getting those decisions wrong. That process can be messy because development rarely happens when you receive the correct answer before the struggle begins.
That is why I am cautious about allowing AI to become what some researchers have described as a kind of prosthetic for thought. A prosthetic replaces a function that cannot otherwise be performed, but most of our teenagers are not incapable of thinking. They are learning how. If technology routinely writes the first draft, finds the evidence, compares alternatives, predicts consequences, solves the problem, and explains what to think next, a child can become very good at operating the tool without becoming equally skilled at the slower reasoning the tool replaced.
Kids Need to Know They Can Think
Dr. Kathy raised an especially important concern in the podcast: if teenagers repeatedly make immature decisions because they have not adequately practiced mature thinking, they may eventually begin believing they are simply bad at thinking. They hear, “What were you thinking?” often enough and begin answering internally, “Maybe I can't think.” That belief can become more damaging than one bad decision because competence affects whether children are willing to attempt difficult things in the future. If I believe I cannot reason through a problem, I am much more likely to hand it off to something or someone else.
Parents can push back by letting children experience their own thinking. Ask what they think before giving the answer. Let them compare two options. Ask what might happen next. When they are wrong, resist the urge to treat the mistake as proof that they should never have been trusted with the decision. A teenager who makes a poor choice and then reflects honestly on the consequences may be developing more than a teenager who simply followed perfect instructions without ever understanding why.
Waiting Is Part of Brain Development Too
One of Dr. Kathy’s examples in the episode was patience. Those of us who grew up before everything was instant had patience built into ordinary life because we had little choice. We waited for someone to call back, waited for a television program to come on, waited for photographs to be developed, and sometimes waited an entire week to discover that half the pictures were terrible. We did not necessarily become patient because we were unusually virtuous. The environment repeatedly required it.
Today, digital technology can build the opposite expectation. If something takes too long, reload it. If the video is boring, swipe. If the answer is difficult to find, ask AI. If a person does not respond immediately, send another message. That does not make younger people morally inferior; it means their developmental environment is different, and parents may need to intentionally create opportunities to wait because the world will eventually demand patience whether an app does or not.
Real Life Does Not Behave Like a Device
This is where the developmental concern becomes larger than schoolwork. A workplace does not always respond instantly. A spouse cannot be customized. Children do not obey prompts. Friendships refuse to stay efficient. People misunderstand, ask inconvenient questions, need time, change their minds, and sometimes require us to sit in a conversation much longer than we would prefer.
If our children primarily practice interacting with systems that respond predictably and quickly, real people may begin to feel unusually frustrating. That matters because success in adulthood depends on far more than information processing. It requires reading body language, managing disappointment, collaborating, negotiating, empathizing, apologizing, persevering, and understanding how another person experiences the same situation differently. Those are people smart skills. And people skills are developed with people.
There Is No Technology Smart
One of my favorite parts of this conversation was realizing that Dr. Kathy’s 8 Great Smarts framework includes no “technology smart.” Technology can certainly expand the smarts. A picture smart teenager may become a brilliant digital designer. A music smart child can compose with software. A logic smart student can use technology to model, research, calculate, and discover things that previous generations could barely imagine.
But technology is the tool. The smart belongs to the person. That distinction matters because we do not want children confusing proficiency with a device for the deeper capacities God has given them. A child who can use AI effectively still needs words, logic, pictures, music, body awareness, nature, people, and self awareness. Healthy technology should awaken and extend those capacities rather than replacing the experiences through which they develop.
People Smart May Matter More Than Ever
Dr. Kathy emphasized people smart for an important reason: God created us for relationship. People-smart abilities include reading body language, collaborating, networking, listening, communicating, understanding social cues, motivating without manipulating, and engaging disagreement without turning every conversation into a battle. Those abilities become essential in friendship, marriage, work, church, parenting, leadership, and almost every meaningful part of adult life. They are also difficult to learn if most social experience is mediated through environments where we can edit, delete, block, leave, or ask a machine instead.
A people smart parent notices when a child's “I'm fine” does not match their face. A people smart employee knows when a meeting requires speaking and when it requires listening. A people smart spouse recognizes that the words may not be the whole message. AI may be able to analyze language impressively, but our children still need embodied practice with human beings whose faces, pauses, tone, gestures, and histories matter.
Play Builds Things AI Cannot
Play is one of the most ordinary ways children practice these capacities. When kids climb, build, invent, throw, negotiate, race, lose, take turns, argue over rules, and figure out how high they can jump without getting hurt, their brains are doing extraordinary developmental work. They are learning cause and effect, risk, self regulation, resilience, physical limits, imagination, and social negotiation. Much of that learning does not look educational because nobody is handing out grades. That is part of its power.
A child wondering whether they can jump from one rock to another is evaluating distance, surface, risk, capability, and consequence. A kid who falls, cries, recovers, and decides to try again is learning something about competence no chatbot can simply explain into existence.
Parents Still Matter More Than the Tool
So what happens when a parent puts down the phone and steps back into the room? More than we may realize. We model that people deserve attention and introduce our kids to boredom without immediately solving it. We invite them into play, conversation, disagreement, laughter, work, and the kind of ordinary waiting that slowly develops maturity.
We also give them a person to practice thinking against. “What do you think?” “Why?” “What would happen if...?” “Who could be affected by this?” Those questions slow a child's thinking just enough for the developing brain to do work that a quick answer could bypass. AI may help answer questions. Parents can help children become questioners.
Don’t Ban the Tool, Change Its Role
I don't think the best response is to pretend AI is going away or that our children should never use it. The better question may be what role we assign it. If the tool becomes the answer-giver for every problem, it can easily replace important developmental effort. If it becomes a coach, tutor, brainstorming partner, simulator, or place to test an idea after the child has already thought about it, the relationship changes.
Try asking a teenager to come up with three ideas before consulting AI. Have them read the answer and identify what they agree and disagree with. Ask them to find another source. Let them explain the final answer in their own words without the screen in front of them. The goal is not to prove that human thinking is superior to technology at every task; it is to protect the child's responsibility to remain an active thinker.
Culture Is Something to Engage, Not Absorb
Acts 17 gives us an important picture for this moment. Paul enters Athens, a city overflowing with philosophy, religion, argument, art, idols, and fascination with new ideas. He does not hide from the culture. He pays close attention to it. He walks around, studies what the Athenians believe, notices their altar to an unknown god, understands enough of their poets to quote them, and then interprets what he sees through the truth of God.
That is a powerful model for raising kids around emerging technology. We do not need to raise children who are frightened of every new idea or incapable of using modern tools. We want kids who can walk through Athens without becoming Athenians in the deepest sense, children who can understand their culture, use its tools, recognize its assumptions, and remain anchored in something more enduring. Paul does not build his worldview on whatever is newest. He brings the new thing under the authority of what is true.
Teach Kids to Filter Instead of Simply Consume
That may be one of the most valuable things parents can teach in the AI age. Before accepting the answer, ask what worldview sits underneath it. Before using the shortcut, ask what skill you might lose by skipping the process. That kind of discernment cannot be outsourced.
Our children will live with technology we cannot yet imagine. We will not be able to give them a family rule for every platform or AI system they encounter. What we can give them is a mind accustomed to thinking, a heart rooted in truth, relationships strong enough to challenge them, and a worldview centered on Christ. Then technology can remain what it should be: A powerful tool in the hands of a fully engaged human being.
Engaging AI Wisely Through the 8 Great Smarts
Word Smart: Have children explain an AI generated answer in their own words, revise it, challenge it, or write their own version before asking technology for help.
Logic Smart: Ask them to compare answers, identify assumptions, test evidence, predict consequences, and explain where AI's reasoning may be incomplete.
Picture Smart: Let technology expand design and visual creativity, but keep drawing, building, imagining, photographing, and creating away from the screen too.
Music Smart: Use digital tools to compose or explore sound, while also preserving live music, instruments, singing, rhythm, and listening with other people.
Body Smart: Protect experiences technology cannot replace: sports, building, fixing, climbing, cooking, throwing, crafting, and learning through physical cause and effect.
Nature Smart: Get kids into environments that cannot be personalized by an algorithm. Explore, observe, garden, hike, classify, and let creation surprise them.
People Smart: Prioritize face-to-face conversation, collaborative work, friendship, family meals, service, disagreement, eye contact, and learning to read what people do not say.
Self Smart: Before opening AI, ask, “What do I already think?” Afterward ask, “Did this change my thinking, and why?” Reflection keeps the child active rather than merely receptive.
Remember: However your child is smart, remember this: AI can help them think, but it should not do all the thinking their developing brain still needs to practice.
