I remember looking at one of my kids before a family activity and immediately realizing they were anxious. I could see it on their face and in how they carried themselves, and my dad instincts kicked in quickly. I told myself I was being compassionate and attentive to what my child needed in that moment. So I changed the whole day. We did not do the thing that was making them nervous, and everybody moved on with less tension. But later, sitting in the car, another question hit me: did I just teach my child that anxiety gets to make the decision?

Who Are They When No One Is Watching?

There is something wonderfully freeing about being goofy when nobody is recording you. You can make the joke, miss the shot, wear the ridiculous outfit, sing too loudly, and do something that absolutely does not belong in a highlight reel. For many teenagers, though, that kind of freedom is becoming harder to find because a camera is almost always nearby, and nearly every experience can become content. Even when nobody is actively filming, the possibility can create an invisible audience in the mind: Was that embarrassing? Would this be worth posting? Over time, those questions can begin shaping not only what teenagers do, but who they believe they are allowed to be.

One strange thing about parenting in the age of AI is that the tool often works exactly as advertised. A teenager has a question, and within seconds they have an answer. They need ideas, and AI generates ten. They do not understand a concept, and the technology explains it again in simpler language. That can be incredibly useful, but it raises a developmental question we cannot ignore: what happens if the tool becomes so effective that our kids stop practicing some of the thinking they still need to learn how to do for themselves?
